"But since you excel in everything - in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you- see that you also excel in this grace of giving."
- 2 Corinthians 8:7
One of the things that we can do as Christians to live into the kingdom of God is to care for and help those who are marginalized and oppressed. It is a beautiful, yet difficult task.
We can make a difference for one refugee family by sponsoring them to come to Canada. Together with St. Vital Evangelical Mennonite Church, we are working with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) to help this family start a new life here. We are taking on the responsibility for the care of their first year in Canada, and if we work together, anything is possible.
The family is made up of a single mother aged 43, and her three teenage children, aged19, 17 and 14. They are due to arrive from Rwanda sometime in November or December 2017. A committee with members from Sterling and St. Vital EMC are already hard at work and we need your help.
What Can You Do?
Please join us in prayer for this family as they transition to a new setting, that God would give them strength, that we will be able to build strong relationships with them, that the adjustment to Canada can be as smooth as possible and that they travel safely.
We need lots of people to plan and offer support when the family comes. This could include helping them move, helping with transportation, spending time with the family, etc. If you would like to volunteer your time, please contact Cornie Thiessen (email@example.com, 204-479-1101).
We are about 90% of our way to raising the suggested amount of funds for this family to support them for one year ($26,000). You can donate to either church and designate it as “refugee support.”
Donate Household Items & Clothes
Do you have household items that you would like to donate to the refugee family? If so, please Contact Linda Parkes (firstname.lastname@example.org, 204-292-1561) and provide a description and picture if possible.
We will then inform you if your item(s) are a fit based on the following:
- Is it needed or do we already have it?
- Is it the appropriate size for the family and their likely dwelling place? We expect some space constraints.
- Is it in good condition? We want to ensure that all living space inspections reflect well on the churches and MCC.
If your item(s) are a fit, we will:
- Inform you of when and where to drop them off OR...
- If you need them picked up we will work with you to make arrangements.
Please do not drop off items at either church without having gone through the above steps. If we cannot use your item, we still thank you for your generosity and remind you of the opportunity to donate to the MCC thrift stores.
